Hoja de ruta is a textbook for college courses on Culture and Civilization of Latin America. This fifth edition of 564 pp is updated as of June 30, 2010. Written in a student friendly style, Hoja de ruta fifth edition includes the new political developments in Latin America which prompted a redesign of the political map of the continent where three political tendencies clearly stand out: a moderate left and center-left, the “Socialismo del Siglo XXI” and the center-right, as well as the factors that have furthered a new way of doing politics such as the cases of Marco Enríquez Ominami in Chile and Antanas Mockus in Colombia.

In addition, it features a new chapter on the Hispanic population in the USA and the impact of the new Arizona immigration law, as well as the latest information on social issues such as the situation of minority groups (women, the GLBT population); the new faces of violence: narco violence and gender violence or feminicidios; the impact of drug trafficking on the economy of the countries producers of drug.

Recommended as "the most engaging textbook of its kind in the market" for introducing the students, not only to a historical overview of Latin America, but most prominently, to an array of current topics of interest that range from politics to how to prepare delicious ethnic plates; from history to the role of women in the shaping of Latin American societies; from literature to reguetón or to the presence of Latin American films at the most prestigious international festivals; from art or religion to the use of flirtatious remarks.

The sixteen chapters of the book follow a skillful, didactic strategy: the "hoja de ruta" or roadmap of the chapter; a self-evaluation, "¿Cuánto sabemos?", of their knowledge on the topic; the chapter itself; a review guide with questions and puzzles, "¿Cuánto sabemos ahora?"; and finally, topics to think, research, write and discuss about. Hoja de ruta transforms the classroom in a lively forum that will prepare the students with a deep understanding of current societies in this always changing continent which is Latin America.

Updated every two - three years.
